COUNCILMEMBER NITHYA RAMAN LEADS DIWALI CELEBRATION AT CITY HALL
For Immediate Release: October 21, 2025
Los Angeles, CA – Today, the Los Angeles City Council celebrated Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, with a joyous presentation led by Councilmember Nithya Raman. The first South Asian elected to City Council, Councilmember Raman has recognized this holiday annually, bringing vibrant colors, community, and spiritual reflection to City Hall.
This year’s presentation featured live music performed by local Dhol players and a traditional Kathak performance – a graceful and expressive classical dance form from India – performed by members of the Indian Performing Arts Center. Honorable guests included the inaugural Consul General to India, Dr. K.J. Srinivasa, who will be opening the newly established Indian Consulate General in Los Angeles this November, as well as Former Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti. Leadership from the Indian Consulate Office, the India Association of Los Angeles, the Valley Indian Senior Association, and members of the South Asian community all gathered in Council Chambers to share remarks and officially recognize the holiday city-wide.
“Diwali is a celebration with multiple meanings, but across regions and Hindu narratives, Diwali symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness,” said Councilmember Raman. “At this moment in America, that message feels particularly poignant. As we celebrate Diwali this year, let us remember that even in our darkest moments, we have the power to kindle light. Here in LA, we stand united in that light – as neighbors, as Angelenos, and as believers in a more just and compassionate world.”
In honor of the holiday, City Hall has been lit in the colors of the Indian Flag.
