Updates from LADWP regarding ongoing power outages
Dear friend,
With temperatures hitting above 100 degrees in Los Angeles since Thursday, an Excessive Heat Warning from the National Weather Service is in effect through Monday, September 9 at 8PM. In response to power outages affecting the region, LADWP has elevated its alert to the highest response level possible and has been working around the clock to restore power to impacted customers. As of 6PM Sunday evening, the number of customers without power was 15,208 out of the Department’s 1.5 million electric customers.
LADWP has increased crews to support restoration efforts and prioritize restoring power to areas that have been without power the longest. However, with a high number of small outages, customers experiencing an outage can expect that a crew response may extend beyond 24 hours. The Department has been in direct communication with residential customers who have been without power for more than 30 hours, and is working to deliver ice to those affected.
To make sure you and your family are prepared in the event you lose power, LADWP recommends taking the following steps:
- Keep a flashlight and extra batteries nearby. Never use candles in a power outage or other emergency.
- Keep a fully charged cell phone on hand. During power outages, you may lose phone service and your cordless landline may also lose power.
- Keep a fully charged portable charger handy in case you need to charge any of your electronics while the power is out.
If your power does go out:
- Report outages online at http://www.ladwp.com/outages or by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).
- Sign up for outage alerts at http://www.ladwp.com/outages.
- Switch off all lights, except for one, so you will know when your power has been restored.
- Keep your refrigerator closed to keep food cold.
- Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors to make sure they are safe.
Our office will continue to monitor the situation and we encourage residents to follow LADWP via Twitter (@ladwp) and NextDoor for the most up-to-date potential outage information. LADWP has also compiled a Frequently Asked Questions sheet in response to customer concerns and inquiries, which you can find HERE.
Stay safe,
Nithya
