Dear Friends,

We have received significant outreach in recent days from residents of Los Feliz sharing concerns about a rise in home burglaries. The feeling of fear in the community has been exacerbated by the fact that many of the streetlights in the neighborhood have been out since March.

Every resident of Los Angeles deserves to feel safe and secure in their homes, and my priority is ensuring that the City is doing everything possible to address these issues.

Based on data from LAPD, there have been nine burglaries in the last month in the Los Feliz hills, a drop of 37.5% compared to burglaries over the same period last year, but a slight increase from the month prior. LAPD has also made eight arrests for burglaries over the last month, and has made three arrests related to copper wire theft over the past three months. At the urging of our office, LAPD has since deployed additional patrols in the neighborhood.

Our office is also taking action to address a large number of streetlights that are not working in the neighborhood. Thanks to decades of under-investment in the city’s Bureau of Street Lighting (BSL) and a sharp rise in copper wire theft across Los Angeles, average repair times for broken street lights have now swelled to a year. Our office is working with BSL to allocate almost $200,000 of our district’s discretionary funds for overtime to repair key stretches of lights, and to prioritize other affected circuits in the repair schedule.

Finally, we are working to convene an information session for residents with LAPD and the Bureau of Street Lighting to discuss crime in the area and provide an update on street light repairs. Please note LAPD leadership is currently attending to the ongoing emergency, placing some restrictions on availability. We will send an invitation to residents as soon as a date is confirmed.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the office by responding to this email, or calling us during business hours at 213-473-7004.

As always, our office will continue to advocate for the resources our neighborhoods need for their safety and well-being.

With gratitude,
